ESSENTIALS FOR SALVATION
According to the Bible, God’s Word, those who believe in Jesus Christ as the one and only Son of God, believe that He died on the cross as an atonement for their sin, and confess Him as their Lord and Savior, are saved – and considered members of God’s family, the worldwide church. We welcome all who hold this belief as our brothers and sisters in Christ and invite them to call Valley Baptist Church their church home (Jn. 1:12-14; 1 Cor. 12:3,12-13; Eph. 2:8-10; Col. 1:18; Acts 16:31).
ESSENTIALS FOR LEADERSHIP
BIBLE: We believe that the Bible, both the Old and New Testaments, is God’s infallible and inerrant Word, written by men who were divinely and uniquely inspired, and that it is our supreme authority in all matters of faith and practice. We affirm our belief in the verbal and full, complete and absolute inspiration of the Scriptures in their original writings (2 Tim. 3:16-17; 2 Pet. 1:20-21; Jude 3). God has revealed Himself to mankind. One way that God has revealed Himself is through nature, history, and conscience. This is called General Revelation. General revelation is addressed to all mankind, in all cultures and throughout the ages.
GOD: There is only one living and true God (Ex 20:3; Deut. 5:7, 6:4; 1 Cor. 8:4-6; 1 Tim 2:5), who has revealed His eternal attributes in the Scriptures. God is a spirit (Jn. 4:24), God is immense, (2 Chr 2:6; Ps. 139:7f), eternal (Ps. 90:2), omniscient (Ps. 147:5; Heb 4:13), omnipotent (Gen 17:1; Ps. 115:3; Rev 4:8), immutable (Ps. 102:27; Mal. 3:6; Heb 1:12), holy (Isa. 6:3; Rev. 4:8), perfectly wise, loving, and good. God manifests Himself to us in three Persons: Father, Son (Jesus), and Holy Spirit.
JESUS CHRIST: Jesus Christ is the second Person of the Trinity, who is co-equal and co-existent with the Father and Holy Spirit. Jesus Christ is pre-eminent and is our divine Lord and Master. He is true God and true man, God’s only begotten Son, born of a virgin, sinless in His life, who atoned for the sins of the world by His death on the cross. We believe in His bodily resurrection, His ascension into heaven, His High Priestly intercession for His people, and His personal, visible, pre-tribulational, pre-millennial return to the world according to His promise (Isa. 7:14; Lk. 1:26-33; Jn. 1:1-5, 14; Phil. 2:6-8; Col 2:8-9; Acts 1:9-11; 7:56; 1 Cor. 15:3-4; Heb 1:3; Lk. 12:40; 1 Thess. 4:13-17; Titus 2:13; 1 Jn. 3:1-3).
HOLY SPIRIT: The Holy Spirit is the third person of the Trinity and He is completely God and possesses all the attributes of deity. He is not an impersonal force or an influence (Jn. 16:13-14). The Holy Spirit has intelligence (1 Cor. 2:10-11), feelings (Eph. 4:30; Isa. 63:10) and will (1 Cor. 12:11); the Holy Spirit may even be sinned against (Lk. 12:10). The primary ministry of the Holy Spirit is to glorify Jesus Christ (Jn. 15:26, 16:14).
MAN: Man was created in the image of God (Gen. 1:26-27, 5:1-2) but fell into sin, becoming spiritually separated from God (Gen. 3:1-7, Rom. 3:14-21). All men are lost and cannot save themselves. A man must be born again by faith in Christ to be reconciled to God. Salvation is by the grace of God through faith in His Son, Jesus (Jn. 3:16; Rom. 5:8). Those who accept Christ as Savior are kept by His power eternally. The judgment of the wicked and unbelieving and the rewards of the righteous are conscious and everlasting (Jn. 3:1618; 36; Acts 16:31; Rom. 3:23, 6:23).
THE CHURCH: The universal church of Christ is composed of all people who have put their faith in Jesus Christ. The church is the spiritual body of which Christ is the head (Eph. 4:15), and each member of the body of Christ is to use their spiritual gifts for the works of service so that the whole body may be built up (Eph. 4:7-13). There is no one denomination that makes up the body of Christ. It is all believers from all ages.
SANCTITY OF HUMAN LIFE: We believe that all human life is sacred and created by God in His image. Human life, regardless of race, is of inestimable worth in all its dimensions, including pre-born babies, the aged, the physically or mentally challenged, and every other stage or condition from conception through natural death. We are therefore called to defend, protect, and value all human life (Ps.139).
SANCTITY OF MARRIAGE: We believe God ordained marriage and defined it as the covenant relationship between one man and one woman (Gen. 1:23-24, Mt. 19:4-6). We believe the Bible only recognizes marriages between a biological man and a biological woman, as determined at birth.
ROOM TO DISAGREE: There are some doctrines on which two Christians may agree to disagree, even though they are in the same local church and part of the same leadership team. Examples include: the dating of events in Genesis, order of events associated with the Lord’s return, and degree of separation from worldly practices. When teaching in any such area, it is made clear these beliefs are not essential for salvation or leadership in the church. We may state the case for our position, but will also acknowledge that sincere and intelligent Christians hold different views. We are committed to nurturing the unity we share as the family of God, and to obeying His command to love another (Rom.14:1-15:7; 2 Tim. 2:23-24; Titus 3:9).
